Supreme Court Fixes ₹30,000 Value for Homemaker Work: A Landmark Recognition of Unpaid Domestic Labour

By Home Academy

In a historic and socially significant judgment, the Supreme Court of India has recognised the economic value of unpaid domestic work performed by homemakers and fixed a notional monthly value of ₹30,000 for calculating compensation in certain legal cases. The ruling marks an important shift in how household work is viewed within India’s legal system and public discourse.

The judgment came in the context of a motor accident compensation case, where the Court examined how to fairly assess the contribution of a deceased homemaker to her family. Traditionally, unpaid domestic work has often been overlooked because it does not generate a formal salary. The Supreme Court challenged that approach and stated that homemakers make substantial economic and social contributions.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and N. Kotiswar Singh observed that homemakers are not merely dependent members of the family but are contributors whose work sustains households and supports society. The Court described homemakers as “nation builders” and emphasised that their role extends far beyond cooking and household chores—it includes caregiving, childcare, emotional support, financial management of the home, and maintaining family stability.

Under the ruling, courts dealing with motor accident claims can treat ₹30,000 per month as a notional value of domestic care and household services while determining compensation for families affected by the death of a homemaker. The Court also recognised loss of domestic care as a separate head of compensation, meaning it should not be ignored or merged into other categories

This decision is important because unpaid household labour has historically remained invisible in economic calculations despite being essential for family and social functioning. By assigning a monetary value, the Court acknowledged that work done inside homes carries measurable economic importance.

However, legal experts note that this ruling does not mean every homemaker will receive ₹30,000 as a salary. The benchmark is intended for compensation assessment in relevant legal cases, especially motor accident matters, and should not be confused with wages or employment income.

The judgment is being viewed as a major step toward recognising unpaid care work and opening broader discussions about the economic contribution of homemakers in India. It sends a message that work without a payslip can still hold real value.
