British Paratrooper George Hooley Killed by Explosion in Ukraine
A British paratrooper was killed by an explosion while supporting Ukrainian forces in Ukraine, according to findings from a coroner's inquest released on October 2, 2026.
Lance Corporal George Hooley, 28, who served with the Parachute Regiment, suffered multiple injuries in an explosion on December 6, 2025. He later died from his injuries in a hospital in Kyiv on December 9.
Incident Took Place Away From Front Line
The explosion occurred while Hooley was observing Ukrainian forces testing what the Ministry of Defence described as a new defensive capability. The incident took place away from the front line.
The precise location and details surrounding the equipment being tested have not been publicly disclosed because some of the information remains sensitive. The coroner said only limited evidence was available concerning the exact circumstances and cause of the explosion.
Coroner Finds No Suspicious Circumstances
Senior Oxfordshire Coroner Darren Salter concluded that Hooley died from injuries sustained in the explosion and found no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Hooley received emergency treatment at the scene before undergoing surgery. He was subsequently treated in hospitals in Ukraine, including a hospital in Kyiv, where he died three days after the explosion.
Remembering George Hooley
Hooley joined the British Army in 2015 and went on to serve with the Parachute Regiment. The Ministry of Defence described him as an exceptional soldier and an impressive junior leader with extensive operational experience.
His colleagues remembered him as a highly professional soldier, a supportive teammate and someone who brought energy and enthusiasm to those around him. He had been due to be promoted to corporal in January 2026.
Hooley's death was previously described by the Ministry of Defence as a tragic accident. He was the first known British service member to die in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The latest coroner's findings provide further information about the circumstances of his death while leaving some operational details confidential.
