  • The Government has launched six SAMARTH-curated training programs on iGOT Karmayogi Platform for State Government officials on December 27, 2023.

NASA Sends Spacecraft to Study ‘God of Chaos’ Asteroid (Space)

  • NASA has re-launched a spacecraft on December 27, 2023 to explore an asteroid nicknamed the “God of Chaos” that will make an extremely close flyby of Earth in 2029.
  • The asteroid Apophis, named after the Egyptian god of chaos, measures about 1100 feet wide.
  • It approaches Earth every 7500 years, with its next close pass happening on April 13, 2029.
  • On that date, Apophis will come within 20000 miles of our planet, closer than some human-made satellites, making it visible to the naked eye.
  • To analyze this rare cosmic encounter, NASA has redirected the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft that recently returned from the asteroid Bennu.

 

 

Newly Discovered 70-Million-Year-Old Snail (Ecology)

  • Scientists have discovered an extinct land snail species in Romania on December 27, 2023.
  • It remarkably survived a major extinction event that killed off 75% of species on Earth, according to a new study.
  • The newly-dubbed species, Ferussina petofiana, belongs to a rare genus called Ferussina which lived around 72 million years ago in the late Cretaceous Period.
  • This is the first Ferussina species identified in the eastern hemisphere and also the oldest on record, dating 23 million years earlier than previous fossils.

 

 

 Zombie Deer Disease Spread in USA

  • It was announced on December 27, 2023 that a concerning brain illness nicknamed “zombie deer disease” is spreading rapidly among wildlife in parts of the United States.
  • Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurological illness that affects cervids – a group of animals including deer, elk and moose.
  • The disease is caused by malformed proteins called prions that attack brain and nerve tissue and it causes loss of bodily control, drastic weight loss and eventually death.
  • It spreads through direct contact between animals, or indirectly through prion-contaminated soil, food and surfaces.

  • According to the announcement on December 27, 2023, the new Chairman of Bombay Stock Exchange will be Pramod Agarwal.
  • Pramod Aggarwal's tenure will start from January 17, 2024.
  • The appointment of Pramod Aggarwal has been approved by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
  • Pramod Aggarwal has been the former chairman of Coal India Limited and he will replace    SS Mundra as Chairman of BSE.

  • Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced new scheme for gig workers attrition on December 27, 2023.
  • Under this scheme, the state government will provide an amount of 5 lakh in case of accident to gig workers while commuting.
  • This scheme will be applicable to gig workers of Ola, Zomato, Uber, Swiggy, Flipkart, Amazon, Meesho etc.
  • This scheme will be applicable only to those gig workers who go from one place to another to deliver goods.
