David Warner (Sports Person)

  • Australian batter David Warner has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) on January 1, 2024.
  • The 2 time ODI World Cup Winner had previously announced that he would be ending his Test career after Australia's upcoming Test against Pakistan in Sydney.
  • However, the opener has said that he will keep himself available for selection in the Champions Trophy in 2025.
  • Warner is Australia's sixth-highest run scorer in the ODI format and is only second to former captain Ricky Ponting's tally for most Centuries for Australia in ODIs.

ISRO Successfully Launched Maiden X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (Space)

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) aboard Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C58 on January 1, 2024.
  • The satellite was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Ten other scientific payloads were also launched along with XPoSat.
  • Now,India has become the second country in the world after the United States to send a specialised astronomy observatory to study black holes and neutron stars in our galaxy.
  • The mission life of the primary payload XPoSat is about five years.

 

Guidelines for Hospitals on ICU Admissions (Health)

  • Union Health Ministry has issued guidelines on January 1, 2024 for hospitals on ICU admissions directing them that they cannot admit critically ill patients in the ICU.
  • The requirements for admitting a patient to ICU should be based on organ failure and the need for organ support or in anticipation of deterioration in the medical condition.
  • According to guidelines, blood pressure, heart rate, urine output and neurological status, among other parameters should be monitored in a patient awaiting an ICU bed.
  • The guidelines have been developed by 24 eminent physicians, including experts from Dubai and Canada.
  • They have also recommended that critically ill patients should not be admitted to ICU if any disease has a treatment limitation plan.

Guinness World Record of Performing Mass Surya Namaskar

  • Gujarat has set a Guinness record for performing mass Surya Namaskar simultaneously at 108 places in the state on the first day of the new year on January 1,2024.
  • The places include 51 historic sites of the state and more than 2500 people performed Surya Namaskar at the state-level function held at the iconic Modhera Sun Temple.
  • The function also witnessed the felicitation of the winners of the state-level Mega Surya Namaskar Competition.
  • Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Minister for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghavi attended the State level event that took place at the iconic Sun Temple in Modhera in Mahesana district.

 

Gujarat to Start Country's 1st Submarine Tourism

  • According to the announcement of January 1, 2024, Gujarat will start the country's first submarine tourism.
  • For this, Gujarat Government has signed an MoU with Mazgaon Dock and this project will start by November 2024.
  • Under this, tourists will be taken 100 meters below the sea in a submarine.
  • According to the plan, tourism will be started through submarines on the seashore of Dwarka, the city of Lord Shri Krishna.

 

Old Age Pension for Dalits and Tribals Limitied to 50 Years in Jharkhand

  • Jharkhand government has reduced the age limit of old age pension for Dalits and tribals on January 1, 2024.
  • This age limit has now been reduced to 50 years, earlier this limit was 60 years.
  • The government has taken this decision because the mortality rate among tribals is high and they do not get jobs after 60 years.
  • Now, about 36 lakh people above 60 years of age are getting pension benefits.

 

Cashless Health Facility in Haryana

  • Haryana Government bestowed a significant gift of a cashless health facility upon government employees and their dependents in the new year on January 1, 2024.
  • Governor Bandaru Dattatreya inaugurated the cashless health facility under Ayushman Yojana.
  • The scheme covers six life-threatening cardiac emergency, cerebral hemorrhage, coma, electric shock, third and fourth-stage cancer patients and any kind of accidents.
  •  It also covers all types of indoor treatments and daycare procedures, catering to the health care needs.

Russia Assumed BRICS Chairmanship

  • Russia assumed the chairmanship of the BRICS along with the addition of five new members on January 1, 2024.
  • Russia’s 2024 BRICS Chairmanship will be themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security".
  • Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates joined BRICS as new full members.
  • BRICS is an acronym that started as BRIC in 2001, coined by Jim O’Neill (a Goldman Sachs economist) for Brazil, China, India, and Russia and later in 2010, South Africa was added.

PLI Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components

  • The government has extended the tenure of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components by 1 year with partial amendments on January 1, 2024.
  • Ministry of Heavy Industries said that under the amended scheme, the incentive will be applicable for a total of five consecutive financial years, starting from the FY 2023-24.
  • The disbursement of the incentive will take place in the following financial year (FY) 2024-25.
  • The scheme also specifies that an approved applicant will be eligible for benefits for five consecutive financial years, but not beyond the financial year ending on March 31, 2028.

Ved Prakash Nanda

  • Prominent Indian-American legal scholar, Professor Ved Prakash Nanda passed away on January 1, 2024.
  • In 2018, Professor Ved Prakash Nanda had received the prestigious Padma Bhushan award.
  • As a professor of International Law at the University of Denver, Colorado, Prof. Nanda carved a significant niche in the academic realm.
  • He served as President of World Jurist Association, honorary Vice President of the American Society of International Law and in advisory council of the US Institute of Human Rights.

 

Succes Masra

  • Chad’s transitional government has taken a significant step towards establishing civilian rule by appointing former opposition leader Succes Masra as the prime minister of Chad.
  • Masra, who recently returned to the country following exile, is expected to play a crucial role during the transition period.
  • This move comes after months of opposition protests against the military rulers who assumed power in April 2021 after the death of longtime leader Idriss Deby Itno.
  • Succes Masra, the president of The Transformers party, emerged as a prominent figure in opposition to the military rulers who took control of Chad last year.

 

Muhammad Yunus

  • A Dhaka court has sentenced Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and 3 top officials of Grameen Telecom to 6 months’ jail in a case over violation of labor law on January 1,2023.
  • The court of Bangladesh also fined Tk 30,000 each and ordered that, in case of default, the convicts would have to suffer 25 more days’ simple imprisonment.
  • The court, however, responding to petitions submitted by the convicts, granted bail to Dr Yunus and other three convicts for one month.
  • He is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank.

 

Basdeo Panday

  • Former Prime Minister of Trinidad Basdeo Panday died on January 1, 2024 at the age of 90.
  • He is best known as the fifth Prime Minister of Trinidad and one of the founders of the United National Congress.
  • Mr. Panday was also a lawyer, trade unionist, economist, civil servant, and actor during his storied career.
  • He appeared in the films Nine Hours to Rama (1963) and The Winston Affair (1964).
  • The film, which was also known as Man in the Middle, starred Hollywood legend Robert Mitchum and Panday played an Indian Correspondent in the film.
