National Transit Pass System Launched

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav launched NTPS pan-India to facilitate the seamless transit of timber, bamboo, and other forest produce across the country on December 29, 2023.
NTPS is envisioned as a ‘One Nation-One Pass’ regime that will contribute to the ease of doing business and will help strengthen the journey towards greater transparency.
National Transit Pass System (NTPS) is designed for user convenience, featuring desktop and mobile applications for easy registration and permit applications.
Presently, 25 States and Union Territories have adopted the unified permit system, streamlining interstate business operations for producers, farmers, and transporters.

Chief Election Commissioner Bill and GST Amendment Approved

President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Bill, 2023 on December 29, 2023.
It was passed by the Parliament in the recently concluded Winter Session.
The new legislation provides for the appointment, salary, and removal of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs).
According to the provisions, the CEC and ECs will be appointed by the President upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee.
President Murmu also gave her assent to the Central Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Argentina Rejected BRICS Membership

Argentine President Javier Milei has officially declined the invitation to join the BRICS grouping of major emerging economies on December 29, 2023.
The rejection was conveyed through letters sent to BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) leaders, solidifying Argentina’s decision to abstain from the bloc.
President Milei’s rejection was grounded in the assertion that Argentina’s membership was “not considered appropriate at this time.”
The letters emphasized a departure from the foreign policy approach of the previous administration, indicating a comprehensive review of decisions made earlier.

India is Second Largest Steel Producer

The Government of India said on December 29, 2023 that marking tremendous growth in the steel sector, India emerged as the second largest producer of steel in the world.
The Ministry of Steel said, domestic steel production stood at around 90 million tonnes and domestic steel consumption at 87 million tonnes.
The Ministry further added that domestic crude steel production stood at over 94 million tonnes, with a growth of over 14 %compared to the production in the same period in 2022.
The steel sector plays a pivotal role in crucial sectors such as construction, infrastructure, automobile, and defense.

New Design of Admirals' Epaulettes Unveiled (Defence)

The Indian Navy unveiled the new design of Admirals' Epaulettes on December 29, 2023.
The Octagon in the new design, drawn from the Naval Ensign and inspired from Rajmudra of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a true reflection of the rich maritime heritage.
In the new design, the Golden Navy button reiterates the resolve to do away with the slavery mindset.
The Octagon represents the eight cardinal directions that indicate an all-round long-term vision.

First Oral Leukemia Drug for Children Introduced

Doctors from Tata Memorial Hospital -Mumbai, introduced the first and only oral suspension of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) in India on December 29, 2023.
This Hospital and the Advanced Centre for Training, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Navi Mumbai, collaborated with IDRS Labs, Bangalore, to develop this drug.
6-MP is a chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), the most common type of blood cancer afflicting children.
The child-friendly formulation is available in the form of a powder for Oral Suspension, and is marketed under the tradename PREVALL.

HAL’s Aero Engine R&D Facility Opened (Defence)

Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane inaugurated a new design and test facility at AERDC of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru, Karnataka on December 29, 2023.
The Aero Engine Research and Development Centre (AERDC) is currently involved in the design and development of several new engines including two strategic engines.
The newly inaugurated facility, spanning over 10000 sq. meters, is poised to be a hub of innovation in the field of aerospace engineering.
Equipped with special machines, advanced setups, and computational tools, it signifies HAL’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.

Arun Bhansali (Appointment)

As per the announcement on December 29, 2023, Justice Arun Bhansali will be the new Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court.
The name of Arun Bhansali has been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium to the Central Government.
Presently Arun Bhansali is a judge in Rajasthan High Court.
Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Pritinkar Diwakar retired on November 21, 2023, after which Senior Justice MK Gupta is serving as the acting Chief Justice.

FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship 2023 (Chess)

Magnus Carlsen has won the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship 2023 title on December 29, 2023.
The FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in December 2023.
Vladimir Fedoseev finished second and Yu Yangyi finished third in the championship.
