Physical Divisions of Europe –  Notes for Competitive Exams

Europe is the second smallest continent in the world after Australia, but it has a very diverse physical geography. It lies mainly in the Northern Hemisphere and extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Ural Mountains in the east, which traditionally form the boundary between Europe and Asia. The continent is bordered by the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Mediterranean Sea in the south.

Europe’s physical geography has played a crucial role in shaping its history, trade, agriculture, and settlement patterns. The continent has a combination of mountains, plains, plateaus, and river systems, which geographers classify into major physical divisions.

Major Physical Divisions of Europe

Europe can broadly be divided into the following major physical regions:

Physical DivisionDescriptionImportant Examples
Northwestern HighlandsOld mountains and rugged terrainScottish Highlands
Northern European PlainVast fertile plainsGreat European Plain
Central UplandsLow mountains and plateausBlack Forest
Alpine Mountain SystemYoung fold mountainsAlps

Northwestern Highlands

The Northwestern Highlands consist of very old mountains and highlands that were formed millions of years ago. These mountains have been heavily eroded over time and therefore appear rounded and less steep compared to young mountain ranges.

This region includes the rugged landscapes of Scottish Highlands and mountainous areas of Norway and Sweden. The terrain here is characterized by deep valleys, fjords, and rocky coasts created by glacial erosion during the Ice Age.

The coastline of Norway is famous for its fjords, which are long and narrow sea inlets surrounded by steep cliffs. The region experiences a cool maritime climate, and agriculture is limited because of the rocky land.

Northern European Plain

The Northern European Plain is the largest physical region in Europe. It stretches from the western coast of France through Belgium, Germany, Poland, and into Russia.

This plain includes the famous Great European Plain, which is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. The fertile soils and gentle relief have allowed the development of large cities and intensive farming.

Major rivers flow through this region, including the Danube River and the Rhine River, which have historically served as major trade routes.

The plain is also the most densely populated part of Europe and contains many important industrial and agricultural centers.

Central Uplands

The Central Uplands lie between the Northern European Plain and the Alpine mountain system. This region consists of old mountains, plateaus, and hills that were formed by ancient geological processes and later modified by erosion.

The uplands include regions such as the Black Forest and the Massif Central. These areas are rich in forests, minerals, and natural resources.

The Central Uplands are important for mining, forestry, and tourism, although agriculture is less developed due to uneven terrain.

Alpine Mountain System

The Alpine mountain system consists of young fold mountains formed during the Alpine orogeny. These mountains are the highest and most dramatic relief features in Europe.

The most important range is the Alps, which extends across several countries including France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Germany. The highest peak in the Alps is Mont Blanc.

Other important mountain ranges in this system include the Pyrenees, the Carpathian Mountains, and the Apennine Mountains.

These mountains are important for tourism, hydroelectric power, and natural resources. They also influence the climate and river systems of Europe.
