Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
Vital Statistics – Exam Oriented Notes for JKSSB & Statistics Exams
Prepared by Home Academy
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is one of the most important fertility indicators in population studies. It measures the average number of children a woman would give birth to during her reproductive life (15–49 years) assuming that the current age-specific fertility rates remain constant.
Definition
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the sum of age-specific fertility rates (ASFR) of all reproductive age groups of women (15–49 years).
It represents the average number of children a woman would have if she experienced the current fertility pattern throughout her life.
Formula
TFR = €sum ASFR *5/1000
Where:
ASFR = Age Specific Fertility Rate
5 = width of age group intervalAge groups generally used are 15–19, 20–24, 25–29, 30–34, 35–39, 40–44, 45–49
Simplified Formula Used in Exams
TFR = sum ASFR * 5/1000
Example Numerical Problem
The Age Specific Fertility Rates are given below.
| Age Group | ASFR |
|---|---|
| 15–19 | 40 |
| 20–24 | 160 |
| 25–29 | 150 |
| 30–34 | 100 |
| 35–39 | 60 |
| 40–44 | 20 |
| 45–49 | 5 |
Step 1: Sum of ASFR
40 + 160 + 150 + 100 + 60 + 20 + 5 = 535
Step 2: Apply Formula
TFR = (535 × 5) / 1000
TFR = 2675 / 1000
TFR = 2.675
Answer
Total Fertility Rate ≈ 2.68 children per woman
Interpretation of TFR
| TFR Value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Above 2.1 | Population growth |
| Equal to 2.1 | Replacement level fertility |
| Below 2.1 | Population decline |
The value 2.1 is called Replacement Fertility Level.
Latest Data (Important for Exams 2026)
| Country | TFR |
|---|---|
| India | ~2.0 |
| China | ~1.3 |
| Pakistan | ~3.3 |
| World Average | ~2.3 |
India’s fertility rate has declined significantly in recent decades due to education, urbanization, and family planning programs.
Difference Between TFR, GRR, and NRR
| Measure | Meaning |
|---|---|
| TFR | Average number of children per woman |
| GRR | Average number of daughters per woman |
| NRR | Average daughters surviving to reproductive age |
Important Points for Competitive Exams
Reproductive age group of women = 15–49 years
TFR is derived from Age Specific Fertility RatesReplacement level fertility ≈ 2.1
Used in population projections and demographic studies
Higher TFR usually occurs in developing countries
