Govt. Medical College Jammu made a humble start in the year 1971 with a grand vision to provide good quality medical education to undergraduates. The aim was to produce knowledgeable, skilful and competent primary care physicians in tune with the regulations of Medical Council of India. The foundation of the Institute has been laid brick by brick by the untiring efforts of technocrats of that time with the support of successive governments.
The institute which was started with the mandate to produce fifty medical graduates made brisk progress and was soon allowed to train hundred undergraduates annually and is now ready to increase its uptake by another fifty students. In the second decade of its inception, the institute started postgraduate training and currently runs sixteen MD/MS courses. The institute is poised to start six full time courses in six super-specialities as well. Presently GMC, Jammu has 180 MBBS seats and 198 post graduate seats sanctioned by Medical Council of India/ National Medical Council and MoHFW, GOI. The institute has started DNB in Cardiology/ Urology/ Biochemistry/ Neurosurgery. Further, during the session 2021-22 the institute is expecting the start of DNB course in many other disciplines in which the inspection has already been completed or to be completed like CTVS/CTA/Hospital Administration/ Psychiatry/ Critical Care Medicine/Neurology.
Realizing that the provision of excellent medical care is crucial for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the medical college expanded its capacity and infrastructure. Govt. Medical College Jammu and Associated Hospitals in the last two decades has doubled its bed strength and boasts of state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic machinery as well as skilled and well trained faculty. Many of its graduates and postgraduates are serving with premier national and international organizations and have proven their mettle. The institute is also doing well on research front with many of its members contributing in the advancement of medical research at national and international level.
An organization with nearly 350 faculty members and 1000 supporting staff is ready for newer initiatives and is poised to break new grounds both in the provision of medical education, research and patient care.
In August 1972, Dr.N.S.Pathania took over as its Principal “founder Principal” at this stage the SMGS Hospital was taken over by the Government Medical College it became center of the GMC activities to give solid and long lasting shape to Government Medical College. By May 1973, temporary college building and part of the student’s hostels were completed.
The first batch of students (hosted by the GMC Srinagar) shifted over GMC Jammu. Around this time the third batch of first year, got admitted straight at GMC Jammu.
