Revit for Mechanical – Complete Beginner to Advanced Course

Revit for Mechanical – Complete Beginner to Advanced Course

🔹 Course Level: Beginner to Advanced

🔹 Suitable For:

Mechanical engineers

MEP engineers
HVAC designers
Plumbing & fire-fighting beginners
Students preparing for MEP jobs

📍 MODULE 1: Introduction to Revit (Basics)

1.1 What is Revit?

  • Revit is a BIM (Building Information Modeling) software by Autodesk.

  • Used to model HVAC ducts, pipes, mechanical equipment, and coordinated MEP systems.

1.2 Why Mechanical Engineers Use Revit

Create 3D ducting, piping, and equipment

Automatic schedules (BOQ, quantity takeoff)
Load calculations (via plugins)
Clash detection (with Navisworks)
Professional MEP drawings

1.3 Revit Interface Overview

Home screen

Project browser
Properties palette
Ribbon (Systems, Insert, Annotate)
Views (3D, section, plan)

1.4 Basic Terminology

Family

System family (ducts, pipes)
Loadable family (equipment)
Levels
Worksets
Phases

📍 MODULE 2: Getting Started with Mechanical Template

2.1 Starting a Project

  • Use Mechanical Template.rte

  • Set project units (airflow, pressure, temperature)

2.2 Creating Levels & Grids

Levels = floors

Grids = column lines
  • (Important for placing ducts and pipes correctly)
2.3 Linking Architectural Model
Link > Insert CAD/IFC/Revit file
Copy/Monitor levels and grids

📍 MODULE 3: HVAC Modeling (Most Important)

3.1 HVAC Components

Air Handling Unit (AHU)

Fan Coil Unit (FCU)
Exhaust Fan
Diffusers / Grilles
VAV Boxes
Chilled water coils

3.2 Placing HVAC Equipment

Systems → Mechanical Equipment

Load families if needed

3.3 Air Terminal Placement

Supply diffusers

Return grilles
Exhaust grilles

EXERCISE:

Model a small room with 4 diffusers and 1 return grille.

📍 MODULE 4: Ducting System

4.1 Types of Ducts

Supply

Return
Fresh air
Exhaust

4.2 Drawing Ducts

Use Duct tool

Choose:

Duct shape (Rectangular/Round)

Size
System type
Offset

4.3 Duct Fittings

Elbows

Tees
Reducers
Transitions
Take-offs

4.4 Automatic Duct Sizing

Revit can size ducts automatically based on CFM (airflow).
Systems → Edit System → Calculate

EXERCISE:

Model a supply duct main branch with two side branches.

📍 MODULE 5: Hydronic Piping (Chilled Water / Heating)

5.1 Piping Elements

CHW supply & return

Valves
Pumps
Chillers

5.2 Creating Pipe Types

Copper, GI, etc.
Set diameter, insulation, system color

5.3 Drawing Pipes

Pipe tool → specify slope, diameter
Use automatic routing

5.4 Pipe Accessories

Gate valves
Balancing valves

Strainers

Thermometers & gauges

📍 MODULE 6: Plumbing System

6.1 Plumbing Systems Types

Water supply

Drainage
Vent
Rainwater

6.2 Water Supply Piping

Cold water

Hot water
Pump systems

6.3 Drainage & Waste Piping

Sloped pipes

Floor traps
Manholes
Vent stack

📍 MODULE 7: Fire-Fighting System

7.1 Fire Protection Components

Sprinklers

Fire pumps
Pipe networks
Alarm valves

7.2 Creating Fire Protection System

Place sprinklers

Connect with pipes
Create zones

📍 MODULE 8: Annotations & Documentation

8.1 Plan Views

HVAC plan

Mechanical plan
Plumbing plan

8.2 Adding Dimensions, Tags

Duct tags

Pipe tags
Equipment tags

8.3 Creating Schedules (BOQ)

Duct schedule

Pipe schedule
Equipment schedule

8.4 Sheets & Title Blocks

Add project sheets

Place views on sheets
Export PDF

📍 MODULE 9: Coordination & Clash Detection

9.1 Working with Other Disciplines

Link structural + electrical models

Create sections to check clashes
Use Navisworks for clash detection (optional)

📍 MODULE 10: Advanced Concepts

10.1 Revit Family Creation

Creating custom AHUs

Creating Diffuser families
Parametric modeling

10.2 Worksharing

Multiple engineers working together

Central file & local file workflow

10.3 Rendering & Visualization

Revit cloud rendering

Equipment visualization in 3D

📍 MODULE 11: Final Project (Complete MEP Model)

You will design a full MEP system of a G+1 Building:

Tasks:

  1. Create levels and grids

  2. Link architectural file

  3. Place HVAC equipment

  4. Model supply, return, and exhaust ducts

  5. Create chilled water piping

  6. Model plumbing system

  7. Model fire fighting system

  8. Tag & annotate

  9. Create schedules

  10. Export drawings in PDF
