When a computer is switched off, its operating system (OS) does not disappear or get erased. Once found, it loads the necessary OS files into RAM, where the operating system becomes active and ready for use.

While the computer is running, the operating system primarily functions from RAM because RAM provides extremely fast access speeds compared to storage drives. This allows the system to respond quickly to user commands and run applications efficiently. However, even during operation, the original OS files remain stored on the hard drive or SSD, ensuring that they are not lost if the system shuts down or restarts.

In conclusion, the operating system permanently resides in non-volatile storage such as HDD or SSD when the computer is switched off. RAM temporarily holds the OS only while the system is running. This separation between permanent storage and temporary memory is fundamental to how computers operate reliably and restart smoothly every time.
