Oil refineries are large industrial facilities where crude oil is processed and converted into useful petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, and petrochemicals. These refineries play a crucial role in the global energy system because crude oil extracted from the ground cannot be used directly in most engines or industries. It is considered the largest refining complex globally and plays a major role in exporting refined petroleum products to international markets.
In the Middle East, one of the largest refineries is the Ruwais Refinery located in United Arab Emirates. This refinery processes large quantities of crude oil and supplies fuel and petrochemical products to regional and international markets. The facility is an important part of the UAE’s strategy to expand its downstream petroleum industry.
Another major refinery is the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria. This refinery has been developed to reduce Africa’s dependence on imported petroleum products and to strengthen domestic fuel production. With a large refining capacity, it is one of the biggest industrial projects on the African continent.
In East Asia, South Korea hosts one of the world’s largest refineries known as the Ulsan Refinery operated by SK Energy. South Korea is a major importer of crude oil but has developed some of the most advanced refining facilities in the world, enabling it to export refined petroleum products.
In the United States, one of the largest refining facilities is the Port Arthur Refinery located in Texas. Operated by Motiva Enterprises, the Port Arthur refinery has one of the highest refining capacities in North America and supplies fuels across the United States.
