Bhutan Parliamentary Elections Held

  • Former Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has won most seats in Bhutan’s parliamentary elections on January 10, 2024.
  • The PDP had won 30 of the 47 National Assembly seats to return to power and the Bhutan Tendrel Party has secured 17 seats.
  • Tobgay, 58, is expected to become Prime Minister for the second time.
  • Approximately half a million voters selected the members of parliament from a pool of 94 candidates presented by the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP) and the PDP.

 

Vishwa Hindi Diwas Celebrated in Bangladesh

  • The Vishwa Hindi Diwas was celebrated in Dhaka on January 10, 2024.
  • High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Verma joined the Vishwa Hindi Diwas celebrations at Dhaka University.
  • The prizes were also distributed to the winners of the various activities related to the Hindi language held at the Institute of Modern Languages, Dhaka University.
  • A cultural programme organised on the occasion by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission of India in Dhaka.

 

IIT Madras to Open New Campus in Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lanka’s Education minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha has said that a new campus of IIT Madras would be started in Kandy in Sri Lanka.
  • The minister announced that the proposal was part of the Budget 2024 presented by Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremasinghe in his capacity as Finance Minister.
  • He added that he held discussions with Director and Deans of faculties at IIT Madras during his visit last month.
  • Dr. Premajayantha added that a team of academics would be sent by his ministry to IIT Madras before the team from IIT would visit Sri Lanka for starting the Campus.

Zagreb Open 2024

  • Reigning Asian champion Aman Sehrawat won the Gold medal in Men’s 57kg at the Zagreb Open 2024 Wrestling Tournament in Croatia on January 10, 2024.
  • He defeated China’s Zou Wanhao via technical superiority in the 57kg final, to win India’s first medal in this edition of the Ranking Series.
  • Deepak Punia, competing in the men’s 86kg category, lost by 6-2 against Kazakhstan's Azamat Dauletbekov in the qualification round.
  • Meanwhile, another Indian wrestler Yash Tushir was defeated by USA’s Quincy Monday by 15-4 in the round of 16 of the men’s 74kg category.

'Yogashree' Scheme launched in West Bengal

  • West Bengal's CM, Mamata Banerjee, inaugurated the "YogyaShree" social welfare initiative on January 10, 2024.
  • It is a scheme designed to offer complimentary training to SC and ST students gearing up for competitive exams.
  • The programme is set to operate in 50 centers strategically positioned throughout the state, focusing on delivering free training exclusively for SC and ST individuals aspiring to secure government jobs and pursue civil services.
  • This initiative aims to enhance equal opportunities in the competitive examination landscape.
