National Conference on Fisheries Insurance Held

  • Union Minister Parashottam Rupala chaired the National Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Insurance in hybrid mode in New Delhi on January 17, 2024.
  • The objective of this is to offer a platform to all stakeholders from the insurance sector to deliberate and discuss ways for enhancing access to insurance schemes to fish farmers.
  • Mr Rupala will also distribute Group Accident Insurance Scheme cheques to the identified beneficiaries.
  • Over 300 participants are expected to participate in the conference including policy makers, state officials, researchers, fish farmers, fisheries universities and insurance companies.

 

PM Unveiled 4000 Crore Projects in Kochi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three pivotal infrastructure projects in Kochi (Kerala) on January 17, 2024.
  • These projects, collectively worth over 4000 crore, align with the Prime Minister’s vision to enhance the nation’s maritime capabilities and foster self-sufficiency.
  • Ahead of the grand opening, a large number of devotees from across the country have gathered at the seaside pilgrim town.
  • India’s first fully developed pure ship repair ecosystem, the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF), was also inaugurated.

Sue Redfern

  • It is announced on January 17, 2024 that Sue Redfern from England is set to become the first ICC-appointed female neutral umpire to officiate in a bilateral series.
  • This historic moment is scheduled to take place during the upcoming WT20I between Australia and South Africa.
  • This move is aimed at ensuring a degree of neutrality in match officiating while also contributing to the long-term development of female umpires in the sport. 
  • Sue Redfern, who represented England in six Tests and 15 ODIs between 1995 and 1999, has been part of the ICC Development Panel of Umpires since 2016.

 

India - Afghanistan T20I Series

  • India beat Afghanistan in the third T20 International after two thrilling super overs in Bengaluru on January 17, 2024.
  • Chasing 212, Afghanistan too ended with the same score.
  • India equaled Afghanistan's score of 16 in the 1st super over to stretch the match, but the visitors could not chase down a target of 12 in the 2nd super over.
  • With this thrilling victory, India won the series 3-0.

  • The ICC on January 17, 2024duly recognized the brilliance of Australia’s Pat Cummins and India’s Deepti Sharma for ICC Players of the Month for December 2023.
  • In a month that showcased cricketing prowess across formats, Cummins and Sharma stood out, earning the prestigious ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month awards.
  • Cummins played a pivotal role in Australia’s Test series triumph against Pakistan, displaying exceptional leadership and bowling prowess.
  • Sharma’s exceptional performances across all three formats, especially against England and Australia, earned her this well-deserved recognition.
