- The 54th edition of the WEF annual meeting began amid growing concerns over global conflicts, climate change and deepfake.
- India has sent a 100-member delegation led by Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Ashwini Vaishnaw.
- The theme of the conference is Rebuilding Trust, emphasizing the focus on exploring the opportunities enabled by the new technologies and their implications on decision-making.

First Human Vaccine Trials for Deadly Nipah Virus
- Oxford scientists launched first human vaccine trials for deadly Nipah virus on January 16, 2024.
- The trials of the ChAdOx1 NipahB vaccine, consisting of 51 people aged 18 to 55, will be led by the Oxford Vaccine Group.
- Nipah virus, transmitted by fruit bats, can also spread through contact with infected animals (including pigs) and person-to-person contact.
- The term "Nipah" is derived from the name of the Malay village where the first cases occurred.

Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024
- Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa achieved a historic milestone in his career by defeating World Champion Ding Liren from China on January 16, 2024.
- This significant victory occurred during the fourth round of the 2024 Tata Steel Chess Tournament held in Wijk aan Zee, (Netherlands).
- As a result of this victory, Praggnanandhaa (an 18-year-old chess prodigy from Chennai) became only the second Indian after Vishwanathan Anand to defeat a reigning champion.
- He also overtook Anand to become India's new number one Chess player in terms of live ratings.
