North Korea Fired more than 200 Artillery Shells

North Korea on January 5, 2024 fired more than 200 artillery shells near two South Korean islands prompting evacuation orders for their residents.
The North Korean military conducted firing in the areas of Jangsan-got in the northern part of Baengnyeong Island and the northern areas of Yeonpyeong Island.
The firing follows repeated warnings from Kim Jong Un's regime in Pyongyang that it is prepared for war against South Korea and its US ally.
South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island is situated in the Yellow Sea.

Country’s First Smart Lab Started

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi has started the country’s first smart lab in its OPD block to provide test facilities under one roof on January 5, 2024.
This facility is seamlessly integrated, offering a wide range of laboratory testing services including hematology, biochemistry, serology, endocrinology and various immunoassays.
The smart lab of AIIMS gets the report of 90% on the same day the sample is received.
This initiative is at the forefront of technological advancements, functioning as a completely paperless facility.

Indra Mani Pandey

Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, a senior diplomat of India, assumed the position of Secretary General (SG) of the BIMSTEC on January 5, 2024 in Dhaka.
Pandey, succeeded Tenzin Lekphell of Bhutan, is the 4th SG of BIMSTEC and will remain in office for a period of 3 years according to a press release issued by BIMSTEC Secretariat.
A career diplomat, Ambassador Pandey joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1990.
BIMSTEC refers to ‘Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation’.

G. Ram Mohan Rao

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced the appointment of G. Ram Mohan Rao as Executive Director (ED) for a tenure of 3 years on January 5, 2024.
With over 25 years of experience at SEBI, Rao brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.
In his capacity as ED, he will oversee the investigation department and the internal inspection department, reinforcing SEBI’s commitment to maintaining market integrity.

Raghuram Iyer, the former CEO of Rajasthan Royals, brings a diverse and rich professional background to his new role.
The selection of Raghuram Iyer was the result of a meticulous process conducted by the nomination committee.
Prior to Iyer’s appointment, the functions of the CEO at IOA were managed by Kalyan Chaubey, the joint secretary of the IOA and the President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Rashmi Shukla

The Maharashtra government appointed Rashmi Shukla, a distinguished 1988 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as the Director General of Police (DGP) on January 5, 2024.
This appointment is groundbreaking as Ms. Shukla becomes the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the state.
She takes over the reins from Rajnish Seth, her batchmate from the 1988 IPS cadre, who retired and moved on to become the chairman of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).

The Centre approved Ayodhya airport of Uttar Pradesh will be named “Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham” on January 5, 2024.

The Union Cabinet gave its approval to declare Ayodhya Airport as an international airport, marking a significant development for the city.

T20 Men's Cricket World Cup 2024 Groups Announced

The ICC have announced the groups for the 2024 T20 Men's Cricket World Cup on January 5, 2024.
Among the four groups, India have been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA, Canada, and Ireland.
