The Assistant Handicrafts Training Officer examination is conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board for recruitment in the Handicrafts and Handloom Department of Jammu & Kashmir. The post is technical in nature, but the written examination generally includes objective type questions from general subjects along with awareness related to Jammu & Kashmir.

The examination is conducted in objective (MCQ) format. The expected total marks are 120 with a time duration of 2 hours. Each question carries one mark. Negative marking, if applicable, is usually as per JKSSB norms.

The syllabus is broadly divided into six major sections.


1. General English – 20 Marks

This section evaluates grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. The level is generally of 10+2 standard.

Important topics include tenses, narration (direct and indirect speech), voice (active and passive), articles, prepositions, modals, determiners, and subject-verb agreement. Vocabulary-based questions include synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, homonyms, and one-word substitutions. Sentence correction, error detection, and rearrangement of sentences are commonly asked. Reading comprehension passages test understanding ability and inference skills.

Preparation Strategy: Revise grammar rules thoroughly and practice previous year MCQs. Reading newspapers improves vocabulary and comprehension.


2. General Knowledge & Current Affairs – 20 Marks

This section covers national and international current events along with static general knowledge.

Topics include Indian History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern), Indian Freedom Struggle, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, Geography of India, major rivers and dams, states and capitals, important government schemes, sports events, awards and honours, important days, books and authors, and international organizations like UNO and WHO.

Candidates should focus on recent national developments, government initiatives, and major appointments.

Preparation Strategy: Revise last 6–12 months current affairs and basic static GK.


3. General Knowledge of Jammu & Kashmir – 20 Marks

This is one of the most important sections for JKSSB examinations. Questions are frequently asked from regional history, geography, and culture.

Important areas include physical geography of Jammu & Kashmir such as rivers, mountains, lakes, climate, and districts. Cultural aspects include festivals, handicrafts, traditional arts, languages, and heritage sites. Historical dynasties of Kashmir, Dogra rule, and important political developments must be prepared.

Special emphasis should be given to administrative changes under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 and current administrative structure of the Union Territory.

Preparation Strategy: Study J&K specific books and revise district-wise information carefully.


4. General Science – 20 Marks

General Science questions are generally based on 8th to 10th standard level.

Physics includes laws of motion, basic electricity, work and energy, heat, and sound. Chemistry includes structure of atom, acids and bases, metals and non-metals, and chemical reactions. Biology includes human body systems, nutrition, vitamins and deficiency diseases, plant biology, and environmental science topics such as ecosystem, pollution, and ozone layer.

Preparation Strategy: Focus on basic concepts rather than complex numerical problems.


5. Mental Ability & Reasoning – 20 Marks

This section tests logical thinking and analytical ability.

Important topics include number series, letter series, coding-decoding, analogy, classification, direction sense test, blood relations, syllogism, statement and conclusion, and basic mathematical reasoning. Questions are usually straightforward but require speed and accuracy.

Preparation Strategy: Daily practice of reasoning questions improves performance.


6. Computer Applications – 20 Marks

Computer literacy is important for this post. Questions are basic and practical in nature.

Topics include fundamentals of computers, hardware and software, input and output devices, operating systems, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, internet, email, and basic cyber security awareness.

Preparation Strategy: Revise MS Office tools and basic computer terminology.

Important Note for Aspirants

The Assistant Handicrafts Training Officer post may also include technical or trade-related knowledge depending upon the specific handicraft discipline (such as shawl weaving, embroidery, carpet weaving, wood carving, etc.). Candidates should prepare basic knowledge of handicraft production processes, raw materials, quality control, marketing, and preservation of traditional crafts of Jammu & Kashmir.

Consistent revision, practice of mock tests, and focus on Jammu & Kashmir specific content will significantly improve selection chances.
