By Home Academy

In India, passports are issued under the provisions of the Passports Act 1967 and are categorized based on the purpose of travel and the status of the holder. Understanding the types of passports is important for competitive exams like SSC, UPSC, JKSSB, and banking exams.

📘 Ordinary Passport (Type P)

The Ordinary Passport is the most common type issued to general citizens of India for personal travel such as tourism, education, or business trips. It has a blue cover and is used by the majority of the population. This passport is valid for international travel for personal purposes.

🔴 Diplomatic Passport (Type D)

The Diplomatic Passport is issued to Indian diplomats, high-ranking government officials, and individuals representing India in official diplomatic assignments abroad. It has a maroon cover and provides special privileges and immunities under international law.

⚪ Official Passport (Type S)

The Official Passport, also known as Service Passport, is issued to government employees who are traveling abroad for official duties but are not eligible for diplomatic status. It has a white cover and is used strictly for government-related work.

📄 Emergency Certificate (EC)

The Emergency Certificate is a temporary travel document issued to Indian citizens who have lost their passport abroad or are unable to obtain a new one immediately. It allows them to return to India. It is not a full passport but serves as a one-time travel document.

🪪 Certificate of Identity

This document is issued to stateless persons or individuals who are not Indian citizens but reside in India and need a travel document. It is used in special circumstances and is not commonly issued.

📌 Important Points for Exams

India issues mainly three types of passports: Ordinary, Diplomatic, and Official. The color of the passport helps identify its category quickly. Diplomatic passports provide immunity and special privileges, while ordinary passports are used by common citizens. Emergency certificates are temporary and issued only in urgent situations.

🧾 Conclusion

The passport system in India is structured to meet different travel needs, ranging from personal trips to official and diplomatic missions. Knowing the types of passports and their features is essential for exams and general awareness.
