Introduction
The Census is the official process of collecting, compiling, analyzing, and publishing information about every person living in a country at a particular point in time.
It is the largest administrative exercise undertaken by the Government of India and serves as the foundation for planning, governance, and policy formulation.

What is Census?
Definition
A Census is the complete enumeration (counting) of every individual living within the territorial boundaries of a country at a specified time.
Unlike surveys, which collect information from selected samples, the Census covers every household and every individual.

Census in Ancient India
Population recording existed even in ancient India.
Kautilya's Arthashastra
Chanakya (Kautilya) advised rulers to maintain records of:

Census During the Mughal Period
During the reign of Emperor Akbar, Raja Todar Mal introduced systematic revenue administration, which included maintaining records related to population and land.
Although it was not a modern Census, it laid the foundation for organized demographic record-keeping.
