Vikings Receive Trade Proposal for Former Starting Quarterback J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings are facing an interesting decision surrounding quarterback J.J. McCarthy after the team made Kyler Murray its starting quarterback for the 2026 season.

According to a recent report, the New York Giants have shown interest in McCarthy, with one reported proposal suggesting that Minnesota is seeking a 2027 first-round pick in exchange for the young quarterback. The reported asking price would represent a significant investment for a player who has made only 10 NFL starts.

McCarthy's 2025 season included 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 57.6% of his passes. He also won six of his 10 starts.

Vikings Have Considered Their Options

Trade speculation involving McCarthy is not new. Earlier in 2026, NFL analysts proposed several hypothetical destinations for the quarterback, including a potential reunion with Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Another earlier proposal from ESPN's Bill Barnwell involved Minnesota sending McCarthy, its No. 18 overall pick and a third-round selection to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. That was a hypothetical draft proposal rather than a reported completed negotiation.

The current Giants discussion is also a reported trade proposal, not an indication that a deal has been completed.

McCarthy's Future Remains Uncertain

The Vikings must balance the value of retaining a young former first-round quarterback against the possibility of acquiring draft capital in a trade.

McCarthy's limited experience means another team could view him as a developmental quarterback with starting potential, while Minnesota could view the situation differently after establishing Murray as its starter.
