4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Uttarakhand, Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR
A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, sending tremors across parts of northern India, including Delhi-NCR. The earthquake caused concern among residents as buildings and homes shook briefly in several areas.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was recorded in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at around 10:22 p.m. IST. The reported depth was approximately 13 kilometres, with the epicentre located at around 30.103°N latitude and 79.561°E longitude.
Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR
The earthquake was felt in Delhi and several parts of the National Capital Region, with residents reporting noticeable shaking. Tremors were also reported from areas of Uttarakhand and other parts of northern India.
Some residents reportedly moved outdoors after feeling the shaking, while others shared their experiences on social media. The tremors were strong enough to be noticed despite the earthquake occurring some distance from Delhi.
Epicentre in Chamoli
The epicentre was located in Chamoli district, a mountainous region of Uttarakhand. The Himalayan region is considered seismically active because of the continuing interaction between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Earthquakes in the Himalayan belt can sometimes be felt over a wide area because seismic waves can travel considerable distances from the epicentre.
No Immediate Major Damage Reported
At the time of the initial reports, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties associated with the earthquake. Authorities and monitoring agencies continued to assess the situation.
Residents in earthquake-prone areas are generally advised to remain calm and follow standard earthquake-safety procedures if further tremors occur.
A Separate 4.5-Magnitude Earthquake in Assam
Interestingly, a separate 4.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Assam earlier on October 6. The National Centre for Seismology listed that earthquake in Nagaon district, around 36 kilometres southeast of Tezpur, at a depth of 33 kilometres.
The Assam earthquake was a separate seismic event from the Uttarakhand earthquake that caused tremors in Delhi-NCR.
What the Earthquake Highlights
The latest tremors once again highlight the seismic vulnerability of northern India, particularly the Himalayan region and surrounding areas. While a magnitude 4.9 earthquake is not generally considered a major earthquake, its effects can still be noticeable, especially when the earthquake is relatively shallow and occurs near populated areas.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity, while residents are encouraged to remain alert and follow official information during and after significant tremors.
