Shreyas Iyer Smashes Maiden T20I Century as India Beat West Indies

India captain Shreyas Iyer produced a stunning batting performance on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, smashing his maiden T20I century to lead India to a commanding eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first T20I in Lucknow.

Chasing 172 runs, India lost Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson early, leaving the hosts at 35/2. Iyer then took control of the chase alongside Ishan Kishan and transformed the match with an extraordinary attacking innings.

Iyer finished unbeaten on 102 from just 43 balls, hitting 10 fours and six sixes. He reached his century from only 42 deliveries, producing one of the fastest T20I hundreds by an Indian batter.

Iyer Takes Charge

Iyer initially built his innings carefully before accelerating dramatically. After reaching his half-century from 28 balls, he scored his next 50 runs in just 14 deliveries.

His century was also the fastest T20I century by an Indian against the West Indies, surpassing KL Rahul's previous mark of 46 balls. Iyer became only the third Indian men's T20I captain to score a century, joining Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

India Chase Down 172

Ishan Kishan provided excellent support, scoring 37 not out, as he and Iyer put together a match-winning partnership of more than 130 runs.

India reached the target in only 14.4 overs, winning by eight wickets and taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Earlier, West Indies had posted 171 all out. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford scored half-centuries, but India's bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Debutant Naman Dhir impressed with three wickets, while India's bowling attack prevented the visitors from setting a bigger target.

A Memorable Night for Iyer

The century marked a major milestone in Iyer's T20I career and gave India a perfect start to the series. His explosive innings not only secured victory but also showcased his ability to take responsibility as captain when India lost two early wickets.

The second T20I between India and West Indies is scheduled to be played in Ranchi on October 9, with India entering the match 1-0 ahead in the series.
