Four Sailors Rescued After Whale Collision Sinks Yacht
Four sailors have been rescued safely after their yacht was struck by a sperm whale in the remote South Pacific, leaving the vessel severely damaged and eventually sinking.
The incident involved the Australian-flagged yacht Tai Tam, which was sailing between Fiji and Australia when it collided with a whale about 250 nautical miles north of Norfolk Island.
Yacht Damaged After Sudden Collision
The crew reported hearing a loud impact before realizing that the vessel had struck a whale. The collision damaged the yacht's hull and steering system, while water began entering the vessel.
The four sailors attempted to control the flooding and keep the yacht afloat. They activated an emergency beacon and issued a mayday call, allowing maritime rescue authorities to begin coordinating a response.
A New Zealand Air Force patrol aircraft was sent to the area to help locate the crew and maintain communications while nearby vessels were alerted.
Crew Abandons Sinking Yacht
As the damage became increasingly difficult to control, the sailors eventually abandoned the yacht and moved into a life raft. The damaged Tai Tam later disappeared beneath the waves.
The crew spent many hours at sea waiting for assistance in the remote region. Their emergency beacon and communications played an important role in helping rescuers locate them.
Rescued by Cargo Ship
A large container ship, MV Sofrana Surville, was diverted toward the area and reached the sailors early the following morning.
The four crew members were taken safely aboard the cargo vessel approximately 18 hours after the whale collision. Reports said that all four sailors survived and were not seriously injured.
The rescue brought an end to a frightening ordeal, although the crew lost their yacht during the incident.
Reminder of the Risks at Sea
Whale collisions with boats are relatively uncommon, but they can cause serious damage, particularly when a vessel is struck in the hull or steering system.
The incident also highlighted the importance of emergency equipment and preparedness while sailing in remote waters. In this case, the early activation of the emergency beacon helped authorities coordinate the search and rescue operation.
The sailors survived the incident, but their Pacific voyage ended with the complete loss of their yacht.
