Tennessee Governor Pauses Executions After Christa Pike Survives Lethal Injection

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused the state's remaining executions for 2026 and ordered an independent review after a scheduled lethal injection for death-row inmate Christa Pike was halted when she remained alive following the administration of lethal drugs.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on September 30 for the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when Pike was 18. Her execution would have been Tennessee's first execution of a woman in more than 200 years.

Execution Attempt Halted

According to reports from Pike's attorneys, officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during the execution attempt. Pike remained alive afterward and was eventually transported from the prison to a hospital for medical treatment. Her condition was not immediately made public.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed the state's established execution protocol and that the lethal-injection chemical used had previously been effective.

Governor Orders Independent Review

Following the failed execution, Governor Bill Lee announced that Tennessee would not carry out its remaining scheduled execution during 2026.

Lee also ordered a comprehensive third-party review to determine what happened during the procedure. He said executions must be conducted in a manner that complies with legal and constitutional requirements and is effective.

The decision represents a significant pause for Tennessee's capital-punishment system as officials examine the circumstances surrounding the failed execution.

Second Failed Execution Attempt This Year

The Pike case is the second unsuccessful lethal-injection attempt in Tennessee in 2026. In May, officials halted the execution of Tony Arthur Carruthers after difficulties establishing an intravenous line prevented the procedure from being completed.

The two incidents have prompted renewed scrutiny of Tennessee's execution procedures and the safeguards used when carrying out death sentences.

Legal and Public Attention

Pike's case had already attracted considerable legal attention before the execution attempt. Her attorneys had challenged aspects of Tennessee's lethal-injection process and raised arguments concerning her history and circumstances at the time of the crime. Courts had considered several of those claims before the execution was ultimately allowed to proceed.

The independent review ordered by Governor Lee is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the failed procedure and could influence how Tennessee handles future executions.

For now, Pike remains hospitalized following the failed execution attempt, while state officials investigate what went wrong.
