The Census of India 2011 is the 15th National Census conducted since 1872 and the 7th Census after Independence. It is one of the largest administrative and statistical exercises in the world. The census provides comprehensive data on population, literacy, sex ratio, density, urbanization, religion, language, workforce, and housing conditions.
What is Census?
A Census is the official enumeration of the population conducted every 10 years to collect demographic, economic, and social data of all individuals in a country.
In India, the Census is conducted under:

Census 2011 was conducted in two major phases:
1. Houselisting and Housing Census (2010)
• Listing of all houses and buildings
• Collection of data about housing conditions
• Amenities such as water, toilet, electricity, assets
• Basis for National Population Register (NPR)
2. Population Enumeration (2011)
• Counting of every individual
• Data collected on age, sex, religion, caste, language
