Smartphone Overheating? 7 Tips to Keep Your Camera Running

High resolution, continuous camera use, and high screen brightness are the perfect storm for smartphone overheating. When you record video, the processor, camera sensor, and battery all run at maximum capacity simultaneously.

To keep your phone cool and prevent another black screen during future shoots, adjust these key settings and habits:

1. Optimize Your Camera Settings

Reducing the workload on your phone's processor is the most effective way to prevent heat buildup.

  • Drop the resolution slightly: If you are shooting in 4K at 60fps (frames per second), your phone is processing massive amounts of data. Dropping down to 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps drastically cuts down the heat generated.
  • Turn off HDR video: High Dynamic Range processing forces the phone to combine multiple exposures for every single frame in real-time. Turn this off in your camera settings if you are doing long takes.
  • Turn off Enhanced Stabilization: If you are using a tripod or standing still, turn off internal "Super Steady" stabilization features. Let the tripod do the work so the digital processor doesn't have to.

2. Manage the Physical Environment

Managing external factors can keep your phone's temperature down significantly.

  • Strip the case: Always remove thick plastic or rubber protective cases before a long recording session. Cases act like blankets, trapping the heat right next to the battery.
  • Avoid the "Windshield Trap": If you are recording a vlog or time-lapse inside a car, never mount the phone directly on the dashboard where direct sunlight hits it through the glass.
  • Use an external cooling fan: If you regularly record long videos, consider getting a clip-on smartphone cooler (they use small fans or electronic cooling pads and snap onto the back of the phone).

3. Adjust Phone System Habits

1
Turn on Airplane Mode
Cellular radios (especially 5G) generate intense heat, especially if the signal fluctuates while you move. Turn on Airplane Mode to cut off network strain.
2
Close all background apps
Before opening the camera, view your open apps and clear them all out. You don't want social media or navigation apps competing for processing power in the background.
3
Dim the screen brightness
Lower your screen brightness as much as possible while still maintaining visibility. Running the display at 100% brightness accounts for a major portion of the phone's heat.

Pro-Tip for Creators: If you are doing long, stationary video setups, record to an external SD card if your phone supports it, or regularly transfer files off the device. A nearly full internal storage drive forces the phone to work harder to organize and write new data, creating even more ambient heat.
